Coffee Liqueur | a recipe for YOU!

We survived the holidays and I hope you did, too. All I have left to do is upload photos to Ravelry for the knitted gifts and try to clean up the tornado that seems to have gone through my house - I have a long weekend coming up, so I should be able to find some time to get some cleaning done. Fingers are crossed. It's no secret that I'm a coffee addict and last week on my snow day I mentioned that I made homemade coffee liqueur. The making and gifting of this lovely creation has become a tradition of ours during the holidays - this year was no exception and as the gifts were opened, cheers erupted over the bottles of Drunken Joe. Yes, we have given it a name and designed labels. We're weird that way.

DrunkenJoeAYWe've been making this for several years now and it's been a learning process to get it just the way we want and this year I think the recipe might have been perfected! It's not only delicious, it's also easy and fast to make!

So, gather your supplies and let's get to making some Drunken Joe!

Drunken Joe IngredientsAYNote: We usually make a double or triple batch and the recipe below is for a single batch.

Drunken Joe Coffee Liqueur

  • 1 - 10 cup pot double-strength dark roast coffee
  • 2 lbs brown sugar
  • 2 tbs dark molasses
  • 4 tbs vanilla extract
  • 1 - 750 ml bottle Everclear

First, brew your coffee - we use Black Gold which is our favorite from our local coffee roaster Black Waters Coffee. Use a high quality coffee, this is not a time to be thrifty and use cheap stuff.

Add your hot freshly brewed coffee to a large pot on the stove. Over medium heat, bring to a simmer and add brown sugar and molasses. Continue to heat while stirring until the brown sugar is dissolved.

Let cool to room temperature and add the Everclear and vanilla to taste.

It's ready to enjoy right away or you can let it rest for a few days for a little more flavor. It also stores really well. We pour ours into a large glass bottle (or bottles) and then fill smaller random bottles we've saved throughout the year for gifting. Easy, right?!

Enjoy and cheers!

Gift Finish Line

It's the morning of Christmas Eve and I'm finishing up the last of our handmade gifts. I've posted photos of yarn for gifts 1-3 and here's 4-7:

This last week has been a lot of knitting for me and I'm exited to be  wrapping it up. We had our first Christmas yesterday and the smiling faces make it all worthwhile. I'm looking forward to all gifts being completed and gifted so I can share the details of what was made.

With needles in hand, this morning I'm clicking away on #7 with the hope of being done by noon today.

Cheers!

Snow Day

It started snowing last night and it's still snowing at 6pm tonight. This morning, as the sun was coming up, it was so peaceful and magical. This is my moment with the snow: image

Growing up in the mountains of Colorado, snow is in my DNA and each year I anxiously anticipate winter. I'm giddy with delight when the snow falls and I stare out the window with the wonder of a child sighing deeply at the beauty. This morning I stood on our front porch doing just this while admiring the white blanket covering our neighborhood.

It's rather lovely outside, but this storm has immobilized Wisconsin. This snow is heavy and wet. We have friends waiting for the power company to come and remove fallen tree limbs from their power lines, power is out in some areas and snow removal has been an ongoing chore throughout the day since it keeps coming down. Snowblowers have been a constant sound in our neighborhood since 6 am today and I hear one or two now. My dear hubby tends to the snow removal and I am grateful that because of him I'm able to continue my love affair with snow. Thank you, my love.

Someone else love this snow (yes, I've passed this onto my "children"). This guy:

Mr. Logan loves the snow (we believe he learned this from Mr. Joey) and decided to take a siesta on the patio today. I had to force him to come inside. Handsome, isn't he?

So, what did I do today with my "snow day"? Well, contrary to popular belief, I did not immediately pick up my knitting needles until later in the day... This morning I went to the kitchen to start our supper of dry white beans, veg stock, garlic, onions, rosemary and lemon:

Then I made a double-batch of our famous Drunken Joe (recipe to come in the very near future):

We are staying warm, the boys are happy and I'm finally knitting. All in all, it's been a good day. I hope everyone else had a good day, "snow" day or otherwise.

Cheers!
